THE PEOPLE VERSUS WATERBLOGGED.NET
I used to think the internet had a way of translating a person, giving a voice to the socially timid and tearing down one’s facades.
In recent light, It seems that it’s really more of a filter or even a blatant inhibition.
COGNITION VERSUS DREAMINESS
Subject appears to have two levels of consious activity: (1) Primary Awareness (present in normal people) and, (2) Secondary Awareness (not usually present normal people). Primary Awareness is self-explanatory. Secondary Awareness, however, is difficult to define. Data taken suggests that subject is thinking about two things at once at any given time. However, these two channels have the same amount of total consciousness to operate on, resulting in a deficit in attention and other things. An example of this are as follows.
eyes are reading” but that their “brain is doing something else.”)
As noted above, these two channels “share” total resources for consciousness allowed by the brain. In order for simple things like communication, studying, and cognition to be possible for the subject to perform, subject’s Primary awareness must have access to more than 50% of conscious resources. We describe the percentage of total resources for Primary awareness as Attention Span. Many things factor into subject’s Attention span. Below is a watered down summary of my findings (several variables have been ommited for simplicity):
—————————————————————————————————————————
Xack’s Attention Span[A] ={Focus[f]+(Interest Level[i](0-9)/9)+(9-Distraction[x](0-9)/9)+(Comfort Level[c](0-9)/9)}/4
A = {f x [{(i/9)+{(9-d)/9}+(c/9)} / 3] } x 100
DESCRIPTION OF VARIABLES
Focus[f] - Base attention span value with many factors of it’s own (see formula below)
Interest Level[i] - How interesting the subject is on a 0-9 scale (zero being lowest, nine being highest)
Distraction[d] - The total level of distractions such as noise and hot girls on a 0-9 scale
Comfort Level[c] - The total level of comfort based upon such elements as temperature and seating on a 0-9 scale
Xack’s Focus (f) = {(Sleep[s](in hours)/8) + (9-Anxiety Level[a](0-9) / 9) + (9-Discomfort Level[d](0-9) / 9)}/3
f = [(s/8)+{(9-a)/9}+{(9-d)/9}] / 3
DESCRIPTION OF VARIABLES
Sleep[s] - Amount of hours subject slept
Anxiety Level[a] - Level of Anxiety based upon how much the subject is worrying about external things.
Discomfort Level[d] - Level of discomfort based upon internal elements such as pain(from injury), hunger, or sickness.
So, we must first calculate subject’s Focus before we can calculate subject’s Attention Span. Here is a select calculation of average attention span for the extent of subject’s first class :
sleep = 8, anxiety = 4, discomfort = 1
f = [(8/8)+{(9-4)/9}+{(9-1)/9}] / 3
f = 0.81
Now, we plug focus as welll as the values for the other three varaiables into the Attention Span formula.
A = {0.81 x [{(8/9)+{(9-1)/9}+(6/9)} / 3]} x 100
A = (0.81 x 0.81) x 100
A = 66%
This means that Xack’s Primary Awareness had control of 66% of mental resources. Although he has the necessary mental resources for his Primary Awareness to maintain its authority and thus maintan some attention, this is a very low attention span. Previous studies indicate that in order for effective cognition to take place, there must be an attention span of 75% or above. Since Xack’s attention span was below this value, we can predict that he had a very hard time paying attention and a very low chance of actually learning anything during the limited times he was actually able to pay attention.
Results agreed with this predicition. Due to the various mental inhibitions and environmental factors leading to a low attention span, Xack learned almost nothing in his first class today.

Do what now?

“I used to think the internet had a way of translating a person, giving a voice to the socially timid and tearing down one’s facades.” I don’t think I put on a facade, but the first part of your sentence kinda described me. I’m not that shy anymore, but I do feel freer writing down feelings instead of stating them out loud.
Xack, you are a freakin genius! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this post. I never could have come us with something as brilliant at this.

By the way, I know the feeling of “eyes are reading” but that their “brain is doing something else.” I freakin do that all the time when I’m studying. I’ll read a passage, but my mind will be occupied with a different subject. Then I think to myself, “What the crap did I just read? Dang it, gotta start over…”

I stopped reading three or so sentences into it when you spelled “conscious” wrongly. Just kidding.

You gotta let me in on those divisions though–where’s your mathematical basis?
September 1st, 2006 at 10:08 AM
We divide by 8 for sleep because humans need 8 hrs of sleep for optimal operation.
We divide by 9 in every place seen because we rated these factors on a 0-9 scale. If I had 9 comfort and divide by 9, that would give me an even one. Anything less than 9 would yield less than one (or a percentage)…this is important and is explained later…
we divide by 3 in every place seen because we have three total numbers.
HERES THE IDEA - every value needs to be a percentage, so we had to find a way to convert scaled values to percentages, hence all of the division. For focus, the average of the three percentages equals the focus percentage (0.81). We multiply focus by the average of the other three variables in the attention span formula. We multiply this by 100 as to avoid confusion and effectively show that the value displayed IS a percentage.
Many variables have been omitted for your unde8rstanding, cap’n. Of course, if you had the time and inclination to look at all the informatin carefully, you could figure everything i jsut said out for yourself (you’d also need a pretty sturdy foundation in intermediate math and such)

I completely understand, cause I invented this formula……

Which is exactly why I asked. Thanx. Much sense.

The Internet: Making the average man’s opinion even more meaningless.

So how do you calculate the number of hours you slept? Do you start at midnight? Or do you count the number of hours you’ve slept in the past 24? Or… some other option? I don’t do all my sleeping at one time. =|
September 1st, 2006 at 10:28 PM
Well there’s your problem. If you don’t sleep at once like a normal person SHOULD, it throws off the whole equation.

thats wierd. throughout me reading this post, my eyes were “reading” the text but my mind was thinking “why in the world am i reading this? i mean anything would be better than sitting here pretending to read this. seriously STOP READING!!!” then i stopped half way through and skipped to the last paragraph. its wierd how the brain works huh?
September 2nd, 2006 at 12:02 PM
Psh, get all your sleep done at once and be efficient? How dull and well-rested life would be!

i see someone has chosen to make a rhyme with my name. this amuses me…..i take the Brad the Inhaler to be of the loyal council of darkness……this is not optional.
September 6th, 2006 at 4:16 PM
Brad humbly accepts your invitatioin into the council. . . he recognizes the futility of his being in his current (alone) state, and strives only to uphold the will of the council.
September 7th, 2006 at 2:38 PM
in taking on the nonoptional placement under council your soul will remain in body, however when and if the council decides your soul will be removed at any moment.
