A long chain of events has greatly changed the world from what we once knew it to be. In the year 2006, a viral avian influenza pandemic hurled the population into a maniacal frenzy. Disease Control programs quarantined entire countries. After failing to neither render a vaccine nor efficiently implement anti-viral medicines, the virus managed to spread uncontrollably. Millions died within the first weeks. Continued efforts were rendered fruitless, and millions more succumbed to the pox. As a last resort, The U.S. and a large band of other nuclear capable countries reached a drastic decision. Nuclear arms were used to wipe out all of the infected areas of the planet. Antarctica, the only remaining inhabitable continent, harbored all of the remaining population . All traces of the virus have been eliminated at high cost. It is estimated only 0.005% of the population remained after the incident — about 30 million people, who were all concentrated in the southernmost (closest to Greenland) extremes of Antarctica. Over the next 5 years, that number would be halved. Electricity became nonexistent.

Life for us holds a brand new meaning.

After learning to cope with the rigors of life in a sub-zero wasteland, our colony stabilized, where backbreaking work and extreme endurance barely afforded one the means to survive.

After witnessing genocide of such mass proportions, many begin to doubt their personal faiths. This group made up about 60% of our colony. The remaining 40% felt that the destruction was a fulfillment of prophecy, the “End of Days”, made long ago by our various doctrines. It wasn’t long before tensions proved to be too strong to bear. All religious doctrines were destroyed, and many were killed. Fearing for their lives, the religious left the colony and migrated west a distance we estimate to be about 100 miles. Communication between the two ceased. It has been 15 years since that day, and about 30 since the destruction of the rest of the world.

Life here at the western, religious colony (Which we have named New Eden) proves to be exceedingly difficult without the luxury of religious doctrine. The basis of our theology remains only in memory. This is the inspiration of our current endeavors.
