Alkynes, like alkenes, can be cleaved by reaction with powerful oxidizing agents such as ozone or KMnO4, although the reaction is of little value and I mention it only for completeness. A triple bond is generally less reactive than a double bond and yields of cleavage products are sometimes low. The products obtained from cleavage of an internal alkyne are carboxylic acids; from a terminal alkyne, CO2 is formed as one product.
An internal alkyne:
R-C=-C-R’ yields (over KMnO4 or O3) R-C=O-O-H + H-O-O=C-R’
A Terminal alkyne:
R-C=-C-H yields (over KMnO4 or O3) R-C=O-O-H + O=C=O

Don’t forgot about cross-linked base pairs, you can cause some serious problems from the resulting BPD’s in the sequence. The genome can’t usually rely on mRNA to catch the error, so excerise extreme caution.
